In Memory of Marina Voinova: Strokes to a Portrait. A Mosaic of Recollections by Grateful Colleagues
This publication brings together the recollections of colleagues from the Music Theory Department of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory about Marina V. Voinova (1972–2026)—a composer, organist, musicologist and teacher, the editor-in-chief of “Muzykal’naya akademiya” (“Music Academy”) in 2012–2018 and the author of the monograph “Organ Music of the Second Half of the 20th Century.” Nine memoirs form a mosaic portrait of the musician in different professional roles. The authors recall Voinova’s student years in the organ class and the brilliant defense of her Candidate’s dissertation on the problems of contemporary organ music (supervised by Yury N. Kholopov, with Valeria S. Tsenova as co-supervisor). Her work commemorating her colleagues and teachers—Yury N. Kholopov, Valeria S. Tsenova, Oleg G. Yanchenko and Maria V. Rasputina—occupies a special place in these recollections. The memoirs also record her educational initiatives: the first concerts of contemporary organ music, organ competitions for children, a collective textbook on world organ culture and a specialized Russian organ journal, the latter two undertaken together with Evgeniya D. Krivitskaya. Written shortly after Voinova’s death on August 9, 2026, these texts preserve vivid traits of her character—courage in the face of a grave illness, openness, humor and an unfailing readiness to help.
