Abstract

The article deals with the problem of musicality of literature, in particular, fiction. The author, based on the works of E. V. Nazaykinsky, considers this phenomenon at different levels (phonic, syntactic, compositional). Referring to a study by the major philologist E. G. Etkind “The Matter of the Verse”, Chigareva critically assesses the presence of common terms in musicology and literary studies (poetry), which have different meanings—terms-homonyms. The author considers rhythm, a phenomenon common to the two types of art, to be the most productive for analogies of literature and music. In the method of analyzing concrete examples, which Chigareva offers, she relies on poetry, while noting the difference between prose and poetry. As an example of the rhythm of artistic prose, N. S. Leskov’s novel “Islanders” is proposed, in which metrized prose is used in certain, especially significant moments. This example demonstrates the specificity of musicality of literature and its difference from musical art.
