This article is dedicated to the 4th International Festival “Baku Contemporary Music Days.” It provides the festival’s background and includes a brief interview with F. K. Karayev, organizer of the 1st International Kara Karayev Festival (1986). The author provides a detailed overview of the festival programs and the works that were performed, offers a brief description of the different generations of composers represented at the festival, and outlines general musical tendencies and directions that emerged at the festival. Particular attention in the text is paid to the synthetic thinking of the new generation of composers, with lesser emphasis on the term “timbre texture” and the concept of a global information field. The prospects of the Azerbaijani school of composition are also discussed.
