This essay presents the author’s personal recollections of musicologist and longtime editor-in-chief of the journal “Soviet Music” (later “Music Academy”) Yury Semyonovich Korev. Reflecting the fluid nature of memory, this memoir covers the period from the author’s youth to the early 2000s. It reveals the multifaceted nature of Korev’s personality: his attentiveness to his interlocutors, his ability to engage in dialogue, his professional integrity, and his editorial intuition. Particular attention is paid to his role in preserving the journal during the difficult 1990s—years of uncertainty and general confusion. The author shares little-known facts from Korev’s life, related personally to him and those close to him. Drawing on episodes of collaboration and personal interaction, he explores the journal’s role in Soviet and post-Soviet musical culture, embodied in its dissemination of information about contemporary music and composers from the Soviet republics.
