Igor Stravinsky in 1942: A Case of the “Four Norwegian Moods”
The article spotlights Igor Stravinsky’s orchestral suite “Four Norwegian Moods” (1942) inspired by a Hollywood commission to create a soundtrack for the military film “The Commandos Strike at Dawn.” Studying the autographs of Stravinsky’s archive at the Paul Sacher Foundation, previously unknown epistolary evidence, and documentary facts allow us to take a fresh look at this Stravinsky’s “peripheral” work. The article reconstructs a creation history and first performances of the suite, provides an analytical description of its composition, formulates the problem of folklore sources, and outlines the ways for further researching the suite as a unique experience of Stravinsky’s contact with folklore material different from Russian.
