Abstract

Doctor of Art Criticism, Professor at Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory Tamara N. Levaya left us on the 15th of January this year. The scale and meaning of her works are yet to be realized but today, only a modest attempt towards this goal can be offered. Levaya’s works often led to the opening and observation of the new musical worlds and the usage of new musicological methods. She released her very first large-scale studies on Hindemith’s and Shostakovich’s works in the 1970s, and, in the 1980s began to work on the issues of Soviet music and the music of the Silver Age. Her book “Russian Music at the Beginning of the 20th Century in the Artistic Context of the Epoque” was a milestone in Russian history of music. Levaya’s works of the last years were primarily dedicated to composers of the mid-20th century like Alfred Schnittke, Sergey Berinsky, Valentin Silvestrov, Sofia Gubaidulina and others, and included significant aspects of the earlier determined issues.
