Vera B. Val’kova

Doctor of Art Criticism, Professor at The Gnesins Russian Academy of Music. Since 2008 she also works in the State Institute for Art Studies. In 1981 she defended her Candidate of Art Criticism thesis “The New Kinds of Thematicism in Soviet Symphonic Music (1960s–1970s)” (under supervision of Victor Bobrovsky). In 1993 she published her doctoral thesis “Musical Thematicism — Thinking — Culture”. She has taken part in a number of International conferences in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Tampere (Finnland), Vilnius, Berlin, Leuven (Belgium), etc. In 1996 she has led the international project “20th Century Music: the End of Epoch?” She is the author of more than 80 publications on music of Lutoslawsky, Schnittke, Mussorgsky, Shostakovich, Rachmaninov and others. Among her published works: “S. V. Rachmaninov and the Musical Culture of His Time” (Ivanovka, 2016); “S. V. Rachmaninov: Life and Work: A Chronograph. Part I (1873–1899)” (Ivanovka, 2017).
