New “Shards”: On Irretrievable Losses and Some Vivid Experiences
The article consists of several essays. The first, memorial part contains brief sketches of recently departed people: the Ukrainian musicologist M. R. Cherkashina-Gubarenko and the St. Petersburg composer A. A. Knaifel. Then the author shares her impressions from visiting performances at the Düsseldorf Opera and Ballet Theatre (V. Bellini’s “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” and Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin”) and the Salzburg Festival (M. Weinberg’s “The Idiot” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”), as well as from listening to the symphonic music of S. V. Rachmaninoff and E. W. Korngold at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. The review of musical events provides food for thought about its trends and how art helps people maintain hope for a better future in today’s turbulent world.
