Naum Kleiman: “Film Music Should be a Voice, not an Accompaniment”
In an interview for the “Music Academy,” Naum Kleiman, an outstanding film scholar and founder of the State Central Museum of Cinema, reflects on the role of music in cinema, its place in the hierarchy of film components, as well as on different ways to achieve harmony between sound and image. Another important topic of conversation was the relationship between the director and the composer. In a discussion with Yaroslav Timofeev, the historical milestones in the development of film music in Russia and abroad were outlined, and the films that became examples of Gesamtkunstwerk were analyzed, in particular, Sergei Eisenstein’s film “Ivan the Terrible” with music by Sergei Prokofiev.
