The essay’s key topic is the issue of melody and intonation in contemporary music. In the author’s opinion, the levelling of melody is one of the most serious problems of today’s musical art. Relying on the examples of Gustav Mahler’s song symphonism, George Gershwin’s or Andrei Petrov’s vivid thematicism, the author asserts the importance of the features of music. At the same time, Nest’eva points out that the search for a new melody actively continues, for example, in the works of Valentin Silvestrov. The author also concerns the tendency towards unification and interpenetration of both humanitarian and scientific fields of knowledge affecting the activities of young composers—which is, in Nest’eva’s opinion, a very promising factor. New forms of music education and the role of festivals and foundations that promote contemporary music are also positively evaluated.
