In recent years Alexey Sysoev (b. 1972) and Vladimir Gorlinsky (b. 1984) have established themselves as leading Russian composers of the middle generation. Due to initiatives by Moscow Philharmonic Society, the Union of Composers of Russia, the “Russian Music 2.0” project, and other organizations, they have gained access to first-class symphony orchestras, and regular premieres of their large-scale works have become widely discussed events in musical life. Yaroslav Timofeev invited Sysoev and Gorlinsky for a conversation about new Russian music and the infrastructure currently being built for its development. The composers spoke about their friendship, the similarities and differences in their creative methods, the changes in a composer’s mindset and technique that come with the shift from chamber to orchestral music, the advantages of working with youth orchestras, spatial music, and whether co-creation between composers is possible. Looking into the future, the interlocutors suggested that the next “growth points” in the sphere of new Russian music would be operatic and cinematic projects.
