A collection of biographical sources on Prince André Volkonsky “Knots of Time” (2022) has been prepared for publication by a large team of authors for almost 15 years. An exact chronology of Vol­konsky’s life, a complete annotated catalogue of works and a complete discography are presented in the monography for the first time, a separate section contains Soviet and Western reviews on concerts and premieres of Volkonsky’s compositions. The recon­struc­tion of the facts required scrupulous work with private archives: Volkonsky did not keep documents, did not like to write letters, and purposefully destroyed many papers. Published letters, memoirs and studies of the composer’s work contribute to understanding the controversial personality of Volkonsky, his role in the history of Soviet music and the reasons why he was unable to fit into the mainstream of the Western avant-garde and authentic performance after his re-emigration.
