Abstract

This article by the prominent musicologist Richard Taruskin (1945–2022), which is published in Russian for the first time, traces the history of the most significant performances of the Six Cello Suites by J. S. Bach (BWV 1007–1012) in the 20th century, from the legendary recording by P. Casals (1936–1939) to the albums by A. Bylsma’s student P. Wispelwey (1990, 1998). Paying tribute to the tradition founded by Casals, the author examines and critically evaluates the attempts of cellists of the second half of the century to find an alternative to it, particularly taking into account the experience of historically informed performance.
