The article considers three main functions of music in human life: pleasure; cognition of the secrets of the inner world of man; and comprehension of the laws of the universe. In his reasoning, the author concludes that with the development of society, and the growth of its intellectual level, the third function becomes more important. At the same time, the importance of the emotional element gradually levels, and the modern composer sometimes consciously distances himself from it. The author also reflects on the attitude to innovation in Western and Russian musical traditions. He speculates about the future of music, in which a different concept of beauty and symmetry will emerge with the strengthening of rationality.
