Abstract

This publication is an attempt to create a portrait of Yury Semyonovich Korev, a unique Personality, Musician and Man, as he was imprinted in the grateful memory of its author— not only during 20 years of cooperation with him as the editor-in-chief of the journal “Soviet Music” / “Music Academy,” but also in subsequent years, as with a senior colleague, until his death on January 3, 2024. The dedication to the journal, for a long time the only scientific-theoretical and critical-journalistic publication in the country, to which life was given, is unique. In the role of editor-in-chief, Yu. S. Korev was not simply in his place. It is difficult to imagine, if we recall history, who else could so skillfully and accurately develop the strategy and tactics of journal life, and highlight priorities over ideological doctrines, and wars of sovereignty. In any historical conditions, the editor-in-chief defended the consolidation of creative forces and advocated for creating a “single spiritual field” of national cultures. He also had a special gift for recognizing talent and drawing like-minded people into a close-knit team—the editorial fraternity. The unique talent of Korev, the author of articles on a variable topics, is evidence of not just journalistic omnivorousness, but, and this is the main thing, an ear for musical modernity and a desire to put his impressions into the written word.
