Abstract

The article analyzes the transformation of the phenomenon of B. V. Asafyev (I. Glebov) over the ninety years of the existence of the “Soviet Music” / “Music Academy” journal. The choice of Asafyev’s personality is not accidental: he was the one who was recognized as the founder of Soviet musicology, whose broadest professional interests influenced the entire Russian musical science for a long time. All the array of materials published in the journal during this time and now posted on its website are used as sources. The analyzed sources are divided into three groups; that classification is based on the subject-object view of Asafyev. The first group includes the works of Asafyev himself, the second—studies about him, and the third includes publications containing references to him. Longitudinal analysis revealed several fundamental patterns in the formation and functioning of the image of Asafyev as a cultural hero of the professional community for ninety years. The most obvious are: the realism of the image of Asafyev in the magazine during his lifetime and the extremely high appreciation of not only his scientific works but also compositions (especially ballets); the canonization of Asafyev as a world-class musicologist and the total disregard for his musical heritage after his death with the intensification of this process by the mid-1980s. In the 21st century, Asafyev as a composer is being completely forgotten, along with the desire to demythologize his figure in the historical continuum of the era.
