Yury N. Kholopov

1932 - 2003

Doctor of Art Criticism, Professor, Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, Laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR, Honored Art Worker of Russia. Born in Ryazan. Gra­duated from Ryazan Regional Music College. In 1954 he graduated from the Faculty of Music Theory and Com­po­­sition, Tchaikovsky Moscow State Con­ser­va­tory (class of Igor V. Sposobin). In 1960 he finished the postgraduate school at Moscow Conservatory (scientific supervisor—Semyon S. Bogatyrev). In 1975 he defended his candidate dissertation “Modern Features of Pro­kofiev’s Har­mony” (based on the author’s mono­graph published in 1967). In 1977 he defended his doctoral dissertation “Essays on Modern Har­­mony” (based on the author’s monograph published in 1974). Member of the Union of Rus­sian Composers (since 1963). Since 1960 Yury Kholopov worked at the Music Theory De­part­ment of Moscow Conservatory (since 1972—Associate Professor, since 1983—Professor). He taught harmony, musical form, solfeggio, ele­men­tary music theory, polyphony, instrument studies, the history of musical science, and the theory of modern composition. As part of a spe­­cial course on harmony in 1994, Kholo­pov founded the tradition of annual student scien­tific con­­fe­­rences “Musica theorica,” which continues to this day. Kholopov developed and implemented new courses “Music Theoretical Sys­tems” and “Theo­ry of Modern Composition”. About 800 of Kholopov’s works have been published in Rus­sia and abroad (including posthumously). Died on April 24, 2003 in Moscow.
