The article deals with the issues of hermeneutics and interpretation of the opera genre by contemporary directors and conductors. It is stated that their role in opera productions has increased considerably compared to previous eras. In the author’s opinion, the vector of interpretations can vary: from a ‘protective’, authentic, careful and compromising approach to a complete disregard for the score and musical dramaturgy. No less important is the question of stage realisations of operas by contemporary composers whose work is unfamiliar to opera audiences and connoisseurs. The author also considers the prospects for the development of the opera genre associated with a new understanding of the function of media and visual means.
