Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the periodization of madness scenes in European musical theater. The author analyzes three views on the historical evolution of opera madness: by psychiatrist Neil Brener, by cultural critic Courtney Miller and by literary scholar Esther Huzer. All these scholars discuss only the texts of the librettos without touching on their musical embodiment. The main criteria and principles of each periodization are exposed, the chronological framework of the periods is outlined, and their characteristic features are described. Both methodologically promising and highly controversial aspects of the works under consideration are emphasized. Quotations from the research are presented in the author’s translation.
