Abstract

This study focuses on the figure of the poet and playwright Gabriele D’Annunzio. His interest in the personality and work of the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin received literary embodiment in the autobiographical lyrical prose “Notturno.” In it, despite his comparatively little fame at the time of writing the book, Scriabin appears as a character. The author reveals the reasons for D’Annunzio’s fascination with the musician’s personality and draws attention to similar motives in the legacies of two individuals who realized themselves in different types of creativity, but coincided in their attitude toward art. Much attention is paid to the Italian-Russian cultural ties of the early 20th century, highlighting D’Annunzio’s contacts with Russian figures, and his musical preferences, against which his interest in Scriabin crystallized.
