Abstract

The article is devoted to the opera “Curiosity,” which appears to be an example of Russian scientific opera in the context of media art and science art. Its authors—N. Popov (composer), T. Rakhmanova (playwright) and A. Smirnov (director)—outline three vectors of interdisciplinary artistic research. On the one hand, the most important semantic motive is reflection on the fate of modern opera, the result of which is the composer’s manifesto. On the other hand, we are watching the mission of the Curiosity rover, which is studying the surface of the Red Planet, and the scientific everyday life of NASA operators. Finally, the play explores the socio-political situation of recent years, and the specifics of the social structure of the world of scientists. In the search for new musical and theatrical forms, the authors operate with many current trends and techniques (mapping, glitch art, phonorealism, screenlife) and touch on topical topics of human existence.
