Abstract

This article is based on family archival materials and the memoirs of renowned cellist Ivan Monighetti, as well as musicologist and organist Tatyana Baranova-Monighetti, a graduate student in the 1970s and later a lecturer in the Department of Music Theory at the Moscow Conservatory. Through the prism of personal experience, the memoirs capture the unforgettable atmosphere of the 1960s–1980s. This period saw the best achievements of Soviet music, vilified by the 1948 campaign, gain recognition, experiments by contemporary Western and Soviet composers make their way onto the stage, young performers overcome bureaucratic resistance and seek renewal of traditional concert forms, and interest in early music and historical performance flourish. Ivan Monighetti was among those
who actively contributed to the renewal of Soviet concert life. He was the first in the USSR to perform a number of works by Western European and Soviet avant-garde composers, despite restrictions. On the other hand, Monighetti was among those who, following in the footsteps of A. Volkonsky, sought to renew the traditional “ritual” of the philharmonic concert, offering programs with a unique conceptual design, featuring elements of playful and theatrical performances. He also became one of the initiators of the historical performance movement in our country and organized the first international festival of early music in the USSR.
