Mikhail G. Byalik

Musicologist, pianist, teacher, music critic. Can­didate of Art History, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, holder of the Order of Friendship (2003). Professor of Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory and the St. Petersburg State Aca­demy of Theater Arts. Honorary Member of the Philharmonic Society of St. Petersburg. He graduated from Kiev Conservatory as a musi­co­logist (1951, class of G. L. Kiselev) and as a pianist (1953, class of E. M. Spivak and A. M. Lufer), post­graduate studies at the Research Institute of Theater and Music in Leningrad (1958, according to the class of Yu. V Keldysh). In 1951–1954 he taught at Dnepropetrovsk Musical College. Mem­ber of the Board, Chairman of the Criticism and Musicology Section of the Union of Composers of St. Petersburg and Member of the Board of the Union of Theater Workers of St. Petersburg. He performed with symphony orchestras and gave recitals, subsequently limiting his performing activities to piano illustrating his lectures and participating in various chamber ensembles. He is the author of articles in Russian and foreign encyclopedias, monographic books and essays on Russian composers, conductors and singers, and gives reviews, reviews and articles on musical and theatrical life. Since 2003 he lives in Hamburg, where he continues his professional activities.
