Sergey N. Biryukov

Musicologist, music critic, publicist. Graduated from Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and completed postgraduate studies in musicology. Candidate of Art Criticism (dissertation topic: “Improvisation in music and its style types”). Since 1988, he has been a music columnist for central newspapers, since 1991 he has been working with the newspaper “Trud” (since 2011—editor of the Culture Department). He has been published in such journals as “Muzykal’naya zhizn’” [Musical Life], “Muzykal’nye sezony” [Musical Seasons], “Igraem s nachala” [Da capo al fine], “Rossiyskaya Gazeta,” “Novye Izvestia,” “Nezavisimaya Gaze­ta” and the blog of St. Petersburg Theatre Maga­zine. Publications include interviews with G. Ulanova, G. Vishnevskaya, M. Plisetskaya, G. Sviridov, E. Svet­lanov and other prominent artists. Author of the books “Nikolai Petrov. Creative Portrait” (Moscow : Muzyka, 2006), “Romance with Contrabass. An Artistic Portrait of Grigory Kovalevsky” (Moscow : Muzyka, 2013), “Denis Matsuev. Life on Crescendo” (Moscow : Muzyka, 2015). Photographer, engaged in reportage pho­to­graphy of musical events. Member of the Union of Russian Composers and the Association of Theatre Critics. Expert of the “Golden Mask” festival (2020).
